Research & Insights – August 2009
The data on search providers show Google dominating market share. The global figures show Google as the clear market leader, followed by Yahoo!, then a fairly even split between Bing and Baidu. No other search engine controls more than one percent of the total market. Australian figures are even more polarised with Google representing 90.7% of the market, followed by Bing then Yahoo!. U.S. figures show a greater number of significant search engines with both Yahoo! and Bing controlling more significant shares.
Generally the top sites reflect the dominant roles of search, social media and multimedia applications.
In August 2008 the top three social networking sites controlled two-thirds of the market. Now, in August 2009, the top three control 76.34% of the market. While the market share has concentrated at the top the positions have changed with Facebook the clear leader.
Video & multimedia sites show a similar concentration with YouTube extending their market leadership by 10%. Hulu which was launched in March 2008 has risen to third position yet has a small portion of the market.
